Philadelphia YIMBY’s recent site visit has observed that construction work is nearing completion at a five-story, 51-unit multi-family development located at 800-30 Vine Street in Chinatown, Center City. Designed by WRT Design and developed by Pennrose, the building will offer units designated as affordable housing for senior citizens and will include parking for 11 cars.
At the moment, the building stands largely complete. Panels of multi-colored siding add a touch of cheer to an otherwise largely featureless exterior clad in off-white panels along the street and plain stucco in the back. Beige brick at the ground floor lends the building a tactile quality and references the neighborhood’s historic context. The structure’s distinctive “flatiron” wedge shape is derived from the site’s alignment along the diagonal Broad Ridge Spur of the subway system. Work continues on the property’s landscaping.

The colorful west facade works well. The almost completely uniform brown east facade hurts the soul. And why so few windows?
God awful
Very flat, small and few windows, colored panels that look dated already and the first floor brick facade looks nothing like the more architectural brick in the renderings – Unfortunate that a new building looks like this one
Why does Chinatown have the ugliest developments in the entire city of Philadelphia?
