Construction work is progressing rapidly on the expansion for Riddle Hospital, situated at 1068 West Baltimore Pike in Media, PA, a town located in Delaware County outside of Philadelphia. The patient pavilion will offer 76 private patient rooms, as well as a new main entrance to the hospital complex. In total, the building will hold 230,000 square feet of space, with large portions of the space designated for an operating facility as well as a large maternity care area. The project comes with a $327 million price tag.
Renderings of the patient pavilion show a modern structure with a unique shape. Roughly halfway up the structure, the building widens, with the building spanning outwards in each direction for the upper floors, to help increase the amount of space in the building without enlarging its footprint or adding additional height. The building will feature three materials which will make up its exterior. Brick will be used as the primary material on the exterior covering the building in the lower floors as well as select locations on the upper floors. Concrete will be situated on the upper floors, adding more texture to the building’s design. Glass will also cover a large portion of the structure, spanning the near entirety of the front face of the ground floor, as well as rising up the height of the building in a column towards the center.
Construction is well underway on the building, with its steel frame having been topped out. Exterior installation has also began, with brickwork being installed in a wrap and column around the ground floor of the building. Though just a fraction of the building’s exterior, it gives a hint to what a finished product could look like in the near future.
The new building is replacing a former surface parking lot. The parking spaces sat in the relative center of the hospital complex, adjacent to Baltimore Pike. The new building will not only help expand and improve on the hospital’s facilities, but will also help increase the medical institution’s presence along Baltimore Pike, which sees thousands of passersby each day.
Although in a relatively car-dependent area, transit access if still offered in the vicinity of the hospital, with SEPTA bus routes making stops, as well as a new Regional Rail Station under construction nearby.
The hospital is expected to be completed in the summer of 2023.
