Philadelphia YIMBY recently visited the construction site of a six-story, 127-unit development underway at 1901-19 East York Street in East Kensington. The new structure rises on the eastern corner of the intersection of East York and Jasper streets. Designed by LRK, the development will span 115,293 square feet and feature artist studio space on the ground floor. The complex will offer elevator service, balconies, a green roof, and parking for 27 cars. Permits list Equinox Management & Construction as the contractor and indicate a construction cost of $20.4 million.

YIMBY last visited the site in May, when we found the structure topped-out and with around half, or slightly over half, of the windows installed, and awaiting exterior facade installation. Since that time, the remainder of the windows appear to have been fitted into the structure; the difference between loft-style paneled apertures and more conventional casement windows hints at the variation of the curtain wall treatment as displayed in the renderings, even though the facade itself has not yet begun to ascend up the exterior.

Upon completion, 1901-19 East York Street will offer a robust design with a heavy traditional influence, which will be as welcome of an addition to the cityscape of Kensington as will its offering of 100-plus new residential units, so we look forward to further progress on the development.

1901-19 East York Street stands two short blocks to the east of the York-Dauphin Station on the elevated Market-Frankford Line, which runs above the Front Street commercial corridor.

if it looks like the artist’s rendition, it will be an asset. IF

  2. The first 4 floors look great. Why go for ugly and cheap on the top 2 floors?
