165 years ago, a man by the name of Francis West Lewis established one of the most famous and reliable hospitals in the world. Now, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has extended its space across many acres of University City in West Philadelphia. With many towers complete in the past recent years, another building, the CHOP Hub for Clinical Collabortion has already started construction at 3501 Civic Center Boulevard, which will eventually rise 377 feet.
With CHOP’s $3.4 billion expansion now effective, the CHOP Hub for Clinical Collaboration will add 560 beds to the hospital area. Their massive expansion is taking up a sizable portion of the western part of the city, as the plan presents four times as much floor area as is contained within the Comcast Technology Center, the city’s tallest building. This latest addition is greatly needed as hospitals desperately need more space and beds to help and heal the sick.
The new tower is squished onto a small property next to the CHOP Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care, with a part of the new tower connecting to the Center’s blank wall. The shape of the tower features some angled cuts, with curved facade facing the plaza side of the Buerger Center. The stone framed cladding is not aligned with the cladding above and below it. The two cladding systems meet halfway of one panel to create a pattern all around the building. Many of the glass panels are deeply set within the facade, creating an effect that makes the stone pop out more at certain angles.
The building is anticipated to be completed in 2023
