Major construction progress has been made at the single-family home at 1355-1357 Kater Street in Hawthorne, South Philadelphia. The building is nearing completion after two attached rowhouses were leveled in March 2021 to make room for the new structure. The current four-story building holds 4,700 square feet, a two-car garage, and a roof deck. Kevin Orndorf is listed as the design professional. Construction costs are stated at $500,000.
The row homes previously situated at the site seemed slightly out of place, mainly due to the adjacent buildings all rising above three stories and the rest of the block boasting recent construction. The under-construction structure features a facade with slender windows that stand out among the surrounding homes. The roof deck will offer wonderful views of South Philadelphia, especially to the east and west.
Demolition of the buildings that formerly stood at the site has created a relatively large footprint for a single-family dwelling compared to others in this area of Hawthorne, which may be accredited in part to a larger plan to modernize the area. Directly across from the building, past the Exxon gas station, is the site of the Broad Street Flats at 701 South Broad Street, which are currently under construction. The new home will be a positive addition to the rapidly developing district along South Broad Street.
