Permits have been filed for the demolition of a vacant two-story structure at 5509 Spruce Street in Cobbs Creek, West Philadelphia. The 1,200-square-foot prewar structure is located at a mid-block site between South 55th Street and South Allison Street. The former single-family dwelling will be dismantled as part of the City of Philadelphia Demolition Program. The cost of the work will be $14,000. Mathis Pendarvis is the listed owner and Thomas Curran is the contractor.
The building features a red brick exterior and an ornamented bay window on the second floor painted white sitting beneath a cornice, both painted white. The filing also calls for stucco to be applied to the to-be-exposed lot wall at 1507 Spruce Street next door to the east and an erosion control mat with seed on lot. No sidewalk work will be carried out.
Two blocks to the south of the property is the Philadelphia Police Department for the 18th District, located at 5510 Pine Street. One block to the west is Jim’s Pizza and Steaks at 5605 Spruce Street, not to be confused with the widely known Jim’s Steaks at 400 South Street. Three blocks to the west is the Morris Recreation Center located at 5835 Spruce Street, which features a football field, a playground, and other athletic facilities.
