Development continues to expand at an unabated pace across University City. At 3601 Filbert Street, Drexel has started construction of Drexel College of Nursing and Health Professions, combining offices with university classrooms. The new building will stand 185 feet tall with 12 floors and yield 174,000 square feet. Ballinger is the architect and the engineer of record for the building.

The project was unveiled last year just before the final design was revealed of One uCity Square, which will sit to the northeast of the Drexel development. At the beginning of this year, Drexel announced that it would occupy the whole building. Caisson digging and installation started at the beginning of September. The future construction timeline is unknown, but the structure could rise above the ground level by next year.

The project’s dynamic façade is in tune with the trend of eye-catching designs being developed around University City. Several angled cuts slice through the building mass and extend to the crown. The cladding was originally supposed to consist of a light stone and glass forming vertical strips of differing widths, but the latest plans extend the amount of glass coverage and introduce various shades of blue with red highlights.

Completion is expected in May 2023.

  1. I find the design disturbing to the university.

Just because it CAN be done, doesn’t mean it SHOULD be done! ?
