Permits have been filed for the demolition of a vacant three-story prewar rowhouse at 1708 North 55th Street in Hestonville, West Philadelphia. The former single-family dwelling is located between Jefferson Street and Lancaster Avenue and will be torn down as part of the City of Philadelphia Demolition Program at a cost of $37,777. The property is owned by Howard Alfred Jr Waites Shirley Jean. The contractor listed for the work is Pedro Palmer Construction Inc.
The building is an elaborate structure with a red brick exterior in a dilapidated condition, with missing windows and a boarded-up entrance. Once the demolition of the structure is complete an erosion control mat with seed on lot will be added to the site and stucco will be applied to the to-be-exposed wall of 1710 North 55th Street. No sidewalk work will be carried out.
The G bus runs on North 56th Street two blocks away. The 10 trolley runs on Lansdowne Avenue two and a half blocks to the south. Also two blocks to the south and one block to the east is the Baker Playground, located at 5433 Lansdowne Avenue. Overbrook High School is located two blocks to the northwest.
