Southern University City is growing increasingly crowded with high-rise hospital buildings, with the latest being the 343-foot-tall, 17-story Pavilion at 300 South 33rd Street. Designed by Foster + Partners as part of the Penn Medicine campus, the 1.5-million-square-foot structure makes a massive contribution to densifying the west side of the city and ranks at number 19 on Philly YIMBY’s December 2020 Development Countdown. The broad building stands out on the skyline with its eye-catching, curvy design. The development cost approximately $1.5 billion. Our recent site visit revealed that the exterior is complete, with interior work nearly finished, as well.
The tower has been in planning since at least 2015, starting with the announcement that the 254-foot-tall, 20-story Penn Tower built in 1974 would be demolished to make room for it. A few months later, early renderings of the design surfaced, showing the structure mostly as it is today, albeit with a smaller crown and without the flared faces on the wider elevations.
The tower has been under construction for over three years now as the progress is inching close to completion. In the last update at the end of October, we reported that the façade had mostly wrapped up, with cladding missing on the ground floor of the building. Now that the building has its shell, the interiors are the main focus of the project as they are about to complete the tower.
The Pavilion is scheduled for completion in 2021, possibly before summer.
