Renderings have been revealed for a 165-unit multi-family development at 201 West Johnson Street in MortonNorthwest Philadelphia. Designed by VBC Studio, the building will rise five stories tall, with units ranging from one-bedrooms spanning 535 square feet to two-bedroom units with 1,080 square feet of space.

The new building will feature a modern yet traditionally inspired design that is common among many recent developments in the city. Brickwork will rise up to the fourth floor, with light gray cladding covering the fifth floor. White cladding will create rectangular boxes on the facade, acting as accents, with darker gray cladding situated within some of these rectangles. Windows throughout the exterior will maintain a uniform size, while balconies with glass railings will add intricacy.

The building will replace largely vacant land. The majority of the footprint will sit on what is currently an open grass field that sits adjacent to a small roadway with surface parking, which will also be partially lost (although the road surface and parking area will be shifted over closer to West Johnson Street). The parking helps serve multiple multi-family buildings in the direct vicinity, the more notable of which being a 25-unit, gorgeous castle-like structure with massive rounded turrets and a large mansard roof with an impressive amount of chimneys.

The project will provide a solid boost in density to largely unoccupied land, a major improvement for the surrounding area. The addition of 165 residential units will boost the areaa’s housing stock and help support businesses in the surrounding area. Philly YIMBY previously reported about the site back in December of last year, when permits were issued for a 32-unit building. Since that time, it appears that these plans were upgraded to the current, larger project.

Philly YIMBY will monitor progress on 201 West Johnson Street in the future.

  1. FYI. While Google Maps uses the name “Morton” to describe this area, it is within the Germantown neighborhood of Northwest Philadelphia. Most people today will not know where “Morton” is when referenced.
