No construction progress has been made at the site of a three-story building proposed at 933 North American Street in Northern Liberties, North Philadelphia, as our recent site visit has shown. In August of last year, one of YIMBY’s earliest articles revealed that permits have been filed for a new structure located just off the triple intersection of North American Street, West Laurel Street, and North Bodine Street, where a Colonial-style rowhouse currently stands.
A July 2020 permit called for the construction of a new single-family structure, ostensibly replacing the rowhouse. However, a permit issued in June this year was revised to call only for a front and rear third story addition, and a July permit excluded a front addition altogether and called only for a rear addition. Perhaps this revision is for the better, as the structure that currently stands at the site, with its red brick facade, steep pitched roof, and a gabled dormer window, is a fine example of local residential vernacular.
We at YIMBY support new construction, a significant volume of which is currently in progress throughout Northern Liberties. However, in this instance it is perhaps best that the building that stands at the site is left as it is. At the very least, the latest iteration of the proposal seems to be the least intrusive of the three.
