Permits have been issued for a multi-family renovation of an existing church building at 6400-10 Haverford Avenue in Overbrook, West Philadelphia. The building stands four stories tall, and will be retrofitted to hold 21 apartments. In total, the structure spans 27,000 square feet of space. Renovation work is estimated at $900,000.
The building at hand for the construction project is a beautiful church, formerly home to the Cathedral of Praise Community Church. The entirety of the facade is comprised of handsome stone work, as well as black-shingled slanted roofs. A variety of arched windows sit throughout the exterior, and will provide the opportunity for very unique interiors within the new apartments. A small courtyard sits at the northernmost portion of the property, and could provide a nice outdoor amenity for building residents in the future.
The preservation of this beautiful old building was necessary, and demolishing it would have been a terrible loss. Luckily, the structure will be able to allocate purpose for many more years with its new residential use, and will join other similar projects throughout the city.
Additionally, the new density will also represent a positive addition to the neighborhood. The area generally does not see too much new residential space added on average, and so mid-range-scaled projects such as this are important towards continually adding more residents and density to the neighborhood.
The Market-Frankford Line is somewhat walkable to the south of the project, and offers a solid transit connection to other areas of the city. Additionally, SEPTA bus routes running through the neighborhood will present more convenient forms of transportation at the site.
No completion date is known for the project at this time.

You have the incorrect address as the title
I respectfully submit a correction to the article. This is my childhood neighborhood, and it is most definitely not the Carroll Park section of West Philadelphia. It is the Haddington section, and this church building sits on the boundary of the neighborhood with Overbrook officially across the street. Additionally, its life as housing the congregation of “The Cathedral of Praise ” was its last function. Prior to that and for many decades, it was the church of the Episcopal parish of Saint Barnabas. That came to end almost 30 years ago and St. Barnabas went on to merge with St. George’s on 61st Street. The Market Frankford El is approx. 3/4 mile south and reached via the 31-bus route on nearby 63rd street.
This location is Overbrook; Carroll Park is east of 63rd. No one who lives at this location calls it anything other than Overbrook.
