Each year, the United States celebrates its birthday on July 4th, with evening fireworks being the highlight of the day. In Philadelphia, which was the nation’s capital between 1790 and 1800, a concert was held big name celebrities by the the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and fireworks, sponsored in large part by Wawa, launched as high as the Center City skyscrapers. The event was a tribute to America’s 245th birthday and the skyline was also lit up in the nations colors.
Just as the event was starting at seven o’clock, viewers were treated with a beautiful sunset that welcomed the night. With the lights coming on, fireworks around above the city were growing increasingly louder and brighter. The fireworks were scheduled to start at 9:45 PM just to the southwest of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The photographs displayed here were captured from New Jersey, where the skyline comes into perfect view. The display started on time as scheduled, just as it was almost completely dark outside.
From the vantage point in New Jersey, the fireworks were clearly visible despite the skyscrapers in the way. The 475-foot-tall Murano and the under-construction Laurel Rittenhouse Square, which is planned to top out at 599 feet, had their silhouettes prominently showing with the bright fireworks in the background. Numerous bursts rose as high or even higher than the Comcast Technology Center, the city’s tallest building at 1,121 feet, launched directly from the perimeter of the art museum. The fireworks could been seen for miles away and will return next year.
