Since August 3, 2020, Philadelphia YIMBY has been publishing content covering development in Philadelphia and the greater region, expanding from the original New York YIMBY site to track content in Chicago, Florida, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Today we look back to a year ago when our first photo report was posted on the site.

The trip started in New Jersey, where the first images were taken on the Walt Whitman Bridge with a panoramic Center City skyline view. Conveniently, the rising superstructure of the Arthaus condominium was prominently visible in the view. The tower stood 13 stories high, with the crane rising around 300 feet high. The first spot to capture the skyline was from South Street Bridge. On the left, the north Riverwalk tower was visible with its concrete topped out; the crane for the south tower was also in view.

The concrete pump on top of the core of The Laurel Rittenhouse was also visible, along with the tall crane. More views were observed from West Philadelphia, including from the parking lot in front of the Cira Center and the Schuylkill Yards area. One Liberty Observation Deck was visited just before it closed for the day, with clear skies providing the dramatic views. The tallest projects under construction in the city, the W/Element Hotel, Arthaus, and The Laurel, were visited up close with a series of photos captured. The trip had ended during sunset, right where it started back at South Street Bridge.

  1. If we are celebrating your first anniversary on August 3rd, then why mention it now?

I’m all for celebrating major milestones in achievement.
Since we are on the subject, how did Yimby select Philadelphia, PA, US?

Did Yimby hire Philadelphians to run this site or just use New Yorkers because we are neighbors?

    • Today is one year from when the photographs were captured. That was mentioned in a draft, but it was revised.

      • Allot has happened in one year.

The W Philadelphia & Element Philadelphia Hotel is finished, the Laurel is almost topped-out, the Arthaus is shaping up, the Riverwalk is looking sharp and we have lots of activity going on across the Schuylkill.

How is the 30th Street Station renovation coming along?

If former, though long-running, residences count, some of us are both Philadelphians and New Yorkers.
