In Philadelphia, multiple major roadways lead to the bustling core of Center City, which sports most of the towers that make up the skyline. A number of bridges, including Benjamin Franklin Bridge, Betsy Ross Bridge, and the Delaware Memorial Bridge, surround the city, allowing motorists to cross the adjacent rivers. The Walt Whitman Bridge Just to the north of the Port of Philadelphia. In this feature, Philadelphia YIMBY observes projects under construction throughout the city from this green-painted bridge.

YIMBY Observes the Arthaus, The Laurel Rittenhouse, and the Rising Philadelphia Skyline from the Walt Whitman Bridge

A few months ago, during the beginning of spring, Philadelphia YIMBY published a feature that looked at major developments in Center City from the Walt Whitman Bridge. This 378-foot-tall, green-painted suspension bridge was completed in 1957, and has since transported millions of people between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The bridge span rises 153 feet above the Delaware River, and offers a fantastic view of the skyline to the northwest. The western side connects to the sports complex in South Philadelphia, while the east side joins Gloucester City, NJ. In this new feature, Philadelphia YIMBY presents an updated look at several major developments in the skyline as seen from the bridge.

A Look Back at the Walt Whitman Bridge Repainting in 2017

Over five years ago, the Walt Whitman Bridge in Walt Whitman Bridge in South Philadelphia was preparing for a renovation that would span several years. The 11,981-foot-long suspension bridge (2,000 feet long at the main span) opened on May 16, 1957 and was in need of a repaint after the last paint job in the late 1990s. The bridge was developed by Delaware River Port Authority and designed by Othmar Ammann, who had designed notable bridges such as New York City‘s Verrazzano-Narrows-Bridge, George Washington Bridge, Bayonne Bridge, and the Bronx-Whilestine Bridge. The bridges towers stand 378 feet tall and has a clearance of 153 feet above the river.
