Over the past year, Philadelphia YIMBY has showcased the skyline on a constant basis, which has seen nearly a decade of constant construction. A number of projects have spawned all around the city, producing massive growth. Center City of course receives the most developments, as it is the busiest neighborhood. Other nearby neighborhoods are also joining in on the growth, such as University City. In this feature, Philadelphia YIMBY compares sections of the Philadelphia skyline via photographs taken this and last year.

In the 2020 photographs, we can see the last cycle of construction around the city wrapping up. Projects such as the W/Element Hotel, standing 617 feet tall, and the Pavilion at Penn Medicine in West Philadelphia were the largest structures in the city under construction. The Pavilion had all of its facade nearly zipped up while interior work was underway. At the W/Element Hotel, the exterior was still finishing construction, with work on the interior and the decorative lighting system also underway.

Several cranes were already sticking out of the skyline for future projects that soon join the cityscape. Arthaus already stood more than halfway up, but in 2021 a lot more progress has been made on each project. Since June, Arthaus has been topped at its full height, with the glass now reaching the top. The Laurel Rittenhouse has recently topped out its concrete roof, with with the steel crown on the way. The CHOP Hub for Clinical Collaboration has been topped out since July, and the large structure still has three large cranes attached to the sides of the unfinished building.

  1. We can also be grateful for the Riverwalk complex as well as the Jefferson tower proposal.

NYC made super slim supertalls all the rage, but Philly Yimby really added value to the city of Brotherly Love. 🙂
