Permits Issued for New Restaurant at 1800 Chestnut Street in Rittenhouse Square, Center City

Permits have been issued for a new restaurant at 1800 Chestnut Street in Rittenhouse Square, Center City. Alterations will cover 1,601 square feet, replacing the Saxbys cafe, which had occupied the first floor and basement since 2018. Permits list JLL Architecture as the design professional. Construction will cost of $345,900

The building’s ground floor unit has remained vacant for nearly two years since Saxbys closed their doors in 2020. Space has been previously configured with a full kitchen in the basement, with the ground floor serving as a takeout space with virtually no indoor seating. A tattoo removal shop service sits above the unit. The ground floor features wall-to-ceiling panoramic windows that look out onto Chestnut and 18th street.

With prime real estate just two blocks north of Rittenhouse Square and three blocks south of the office corridor on Market Street, it is easy to imagine the new restaurant being successful if it can adequately capture the surrounding foot traffic coming from both visitors to the Rittenhouse Square area and corporate professionals in surrounding areas going out for daily lunch.

Current permits do not list which restaurant will occupy the unit but that it will primarily be a takeout layout with the ability to serve less than fifty people.
