The Convention Center area of Center City to the northeast of City Hall has long been a notable hotspot for hotels, and it could soon see another addition. The AC Hotel, part of the AC Marriott Hotel brand, is planned for 230 North 13th Street. Designed by Bergmann Associates and developed by Baywood Hotels, the project would stand 15 stories and 181 feet tall. The base of the high-rise would incorporate the historic Big Brothers Big Sisters of America building currently at the site.
Permits for a 12-story, 150-room hotel were first filed in 2014. Another filing three years later increased the height by three stories and called for the addition of a restaurant and a rooftop pool, while a “coming soon” sign with a project rendering appeared at the site. A demolition permit was issued the following year. However, no construction activity has taken place yet at the site.
The prewar Big Brothers Big Sisters of America building, designed in an Art Modern style, was listed on the Historic register in 2008. The two-story structure once served as a private screening location for Warner Brothers, and later became home to NFL Films. The tower will be set back from the historic façade and will feature a beige and brown masonry curtain wall with a conventional grid of windows.
No anticipated completion date has been announced.
