The city of Philadelphia and the surrounding region offers ample vantage points for viewing the skyline. The more distant views often show a clear perspective of a large swath of the growing skyline, offering various angles that go unseen angles from within the city itself. These views clearly show the new vertical mass being added to Center City and beyond, with tower cranes visible in various locations. In this feature, Philadelphia YIMBY observes various new projects rising into the skyline from a vantage point in New Jersey to the southeast of Center City.

The first skyscraper we documented is Arthaus, which had reached the very top of the structure in June of last year. The 542-foot-tall, 47-story high-rise is rapidly approaching completion, with the facade is just about wrapped up and the interior work continuing. The tower fits in the skyline in a great way, with the contrasting blue glass and white metal detailing complimenting the existing towers in the city.

The Laurel Rittenhouse rose throughout 2021, and the X-braced steel parapet was just completed in the last month of the year. The 599-foot-tall skyscraper will feature 185 rental and 60 condominium units, which are slated for occupancy by the end of this year. The building is shaping up to looks like a vintage Modernist structure, yet executed with a contemporary style.

Work on the Thomas Jefferson Specialty Care Pavilion is also well underway, as during 2021 the large foundation was excavated and the basement floors were constructed for two buildings. Though the high-rise planned at 1153 Chestnut Street is currently on hold, the 372-foot-tall, 23-story medical tower has already risen more than halfway and will feature breakthrough modern technology as well as a curvy glass facade that will add a fresh look to the neighborhood. Though the facade has not been installed yet, the structure already looks massive and is shaping up to be a perfect expansion for Jefferson Health.

Thanks TK — I appreciate your unusual ‘perspective’. It’d be great to identify some of the other structures in the photos. For example, is that Walt Whitman Bridge in the foreground of the pic of Jefferson’s Specialty Care Pavilion?

  2. From where in Jersey were these shots taken? Looks nice.
