The Philadelphia skyline has seen a significant transformation over the past two years, with the construction of two condominium towers and several other high-rises. One of the condo towers, The Laurel Rittenhouse, has risen at 1911 Walnut Street in Rittenhouse Square, Center City. designed by Solomon Cordwell Buenz, while the project was developed by Southern Land Company, the skyscraper stands 604 feet and 48 stories tall. The tower will feature a residential and condo entrance on the ground floor, along with retail and amenity space within the four-story annex to the north. The tower will feature 185 rental units and 64 condominium units.
Signs of development were observed over a decade ago in 2008; at the time, the recession killed the chance of a new tower. However, in 2015, the current developer picked up the property and eventually the design was finalized by 2017. In November 2018, banners were up on the fence and, shortly after, excavation work had started. One year later, the tower crane was erected on the site, shortly after the concrete mat was poured. In June 2020, the tower rose above ground, with the second floor was being set up. The tower rose halfway up by February 2021 and was completely topped out in December.
Much progress has been made on the skyscraper, as the structure of the tower is currently clad in its by the glass, stone , and metal exterior. The dark glass contrasts with the bright stone cladding, lending contrast to the neighborhood. At the top of the tower, the X-braced crown shows through the glass, and will be shown off more prominently when the crown is lit up. Just to the north of the tower, the steel structure of the four-story amenity podium has recently topped out. The tower crane attached to the east side of the building is still up, but presumably will come down within the next few months.
The Laurel Rittenhouse Square is scheduled for completion in August 2022.
