A large parking garage at 900 Locust Street in Washington Square West, Center City, is now closed and is expected to be demolished to make way for the Jefferson University Caroline Kimmel Biomedical Research Center. The building will stand 170 feet and 12 stories tall and contain over 220,000 square feet of space. Designed by Payette, the building will feature a glass and wood-colored facade.

Jefferson Health is actively expanding its campus on the east side of Center City, as the Jefferson Center was recently completed and the Thomas Jefferson Specialty Care Pavilion is currently underway.

The garage stands seven stories tall, with the exterior of the first floor is painted blue all around. The building stands adjacent to the Bluemle Life Science Building and directly next to the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. During our last visit to the site in January, the garage was still open as several vehicles were observed on every floor and cars were entering and exiting the garage.

The structure still stands at the moment, but no longer appears to be operational. The entrance at Locust Street is closed, while the exit appears still open as a large truck was seen inside the building. We expect the structure to be demolished in the near future to make way for the new building that will connect to the Bluemle Life Science Building.

No completion date has yet been announced, though construction may be finished by 2023 or 2024.

  1. I wish it were taller.

  2. Jefferson University Caroline Kimmel Biomedical Research Center accommodates an additional 56 principal investigators, a 32 percent increase over Jeff’s current number of research scientists. Life science research gets a significant boost, making this project a win for all of us.

Moreover, If demo occurs soon, that would make three Center City garages razed just this year, 1620 Sansom, 12th and Sansom and this one, 9th and Locust. Enough to make me ‘raze’ a congratulatory toast.

  3. I Wish it was taller but its good infill, and besides there’s other towers nearby, I’m glad there expanding as rapidly as they are. Cant wait to see whats next

  4. Thanks for being such a great resource about what’s happening in Philadelphia. We’re following the expansion of the city’s medical and educational institutions for our Saving the City documentary series about making cities better places. We filmed a lot in Philly and a Yorktown neighborhood story is one of several preview videos on our website and other platforms.

  5. Where will research scientists and people who need Jefferson’s medical services who have no choice but to drive into Philadelphia–not to mention anyone who is visiting the city who must drive–park? The demolition of parking garages is going to catch up to us and it won’t be pretty. Not everyone can ride a bike or has access to public transportation.
