The area around western Vine Street has been experiencing a generational wave of new construction. RAMSA’s 382-foot Alexander at 1601 Vine Street wrapped in 2018, the ten-story 2100 Hamilton Street will soon rise nearby, and last year, long after the initial announcement for the two-towered Cathedral Place project, architecture firm Solomon Cordwell Buenz finally released renderings for Cathedral Place Phase 1, a 245-foot, 23-story high-rise at 222 North 17th Street, which would stand behind the iconic, domed Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Logan Square.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia had long been planning on building on the two big lots surrounding the Cathedral Basilica. When the proposal was first revealed back in October 2017, renderings showed two oval-shaped buildings lined with balconies. The site for the building is currently occupied by a spacious parking lot with a small three story building that is clad with interlocking bricks, taking up over one fourth of the entire property for the new building. The tower will have 3,000 square feet of retail on the ground floor, 273 residential units, and a total square footage of 265,849 square feet. Since the building will stand on the site of what is currently a parking lot, the parking will be transferred to underground with 18 spaces when the building is complete.

The sharp design of the building will draw the public gaze as the building will be prominently visible from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The west facade will include two major angled cuts forming an approximately 40-degree angle, with the south angle featuring a protruding section with a terrace near the top.

The building is anticipated for completion by 2024.

  1. Considering how dominating phase 2 will be, I’m surprised that phase 1 will be visible from certain skyline views! ?

Phase 1 really compliments phase 2 tremendously.
I am really looking forward to updates on this interesting project. ???
