Demolition work has commenced on the many properties at the site of the high-rise proposed at 1101 Walnut Street in Washington Square West, Center City. The future structure will rise to a height of 259 feet and 23 stories. Designed by JKRP Architects and developed by ARD 1105 Walnut LLC and LD Investment Partners LLC, the tower will feature 111 residential units nearly 6,000 square feet of retail at the ground floor. The building will rise directly across a helipad on top of a Jefferson Health property, which had lowered the height of the 12th and Sansom proposal nearby.

The design was unveiled in August 2019 with a pleasant blend of stone and glass that fits the area. In the January update on this tower, construction permits had been submitted to the city and were later approved. The same block will soon be home to two more buildings, with the Blue Ivy Hotel planned to the north of the site and the 12 + Sansom project to be located to the northwest of the site. Two blocks to the north is the massive East Market Phase 3 development that will soon see the erection of two buildings above 300 feet.

Recently, YIMBY looked at the site of the project and discovered that the building that used to stand at the site, a single-story Wendy’s restaurant, is now gone. A metal fence now surrounds the perimeter, with signs for Ernest Bock and Sons Inc. posted around the site. Soon, excavation will start and it is not expected to take a long time.

  1. I’m sure the community will miss having Wendy’s around.

I recall having a Gino’s hamburger fast food restaurant on the site of the Shops at Liberty Place.

Across the street (Chestnut Street), there were two arcades.
That was life back in the 80’s.
    Great music, great food.

Center City was so much fun back then!

The Market-Frankford line had the old Almond joy cars and the Broad Street line had the brand new Kawasaki cars.

I love Center City, but we lost so much over the years.
