A recent site visit by Philadelphia YIMBY has noted that construction work is nearly complete at a six-story, 35-unit residential building at 2043-51 North Front Street in Fishtown, though permits were issued last October. Designed by CANNOdesign, the building stands six stories tall and will feature commercial space on the ground floor and parking for 35 bicycles. Tester Construction is listed as the contractor.

2043-51 North Front Street is a welcome addition to a rapidly densifying portion of Fishtown. The building’s red and gray brick exterior, cantilevers clad in dark metal paneling with narrow vertical grooves, and minimalist single-pane windows channel an urbane sophistication and fit well with neighboring prewar structures. A 2,926-square-foot ground-level retail space, with 1,000 square feet of usable basement space (the latter being “oriented perfectly as back-of-house for a restaurant or food use tenant,” according to a listing) is currently seeking a tenant.

2043-51 North Front Street stands one-and-a-half long blocks to the north of the Berks Station on the Market-Frankford subway line, with the el’s trestle passing right by the new development. Route 3 and 89 buses service the surrounding area. Norris Square Park, the neighborhood’s premier green space, is situated within two short blocks to the northwest.

  1. A very attractive building. A lot of seemingly upscale buildings are going up adjacent to the Market-Frankford line. Isn’t that pretty noisy? Why would anyone pay up for a bedroom next to an elevated versus even one block away? New Yorker asking.

Would be great to see the three quaint, two-story row homes, 204, 206, and 208 Dreer St., stick around to provide variety both architecturally and as living quarters, to the many mid-rises on and near Front St.

  3. This used to be a garage and it is right next to the building with a milk bottle preserved by the Historical Commission.

More likely, first floor may be taken by a a restaurant.

  5. Looks like it should be out in King of Prussia or the Great Valley Corporate Center in Malvern.

  6. A few of these last posts have all been in East Kensington

  7. This is not Fishtown. It’s Kensington. Everyone knows it and they’re pushing it being in Fishtown because of the location being more desirable
