Jefferson Health has long served as a major catalyst for development in the Washington Square West and Washington Square West neighborhood in Center City. The medical services provider is now planning to expand at 1020 Walnut Street with a new 170-foot-tall, 12-story structure designed by Payette. The 220,000-square-foot facility will be called the Jefferson University Caroline Kimmel Biomedical Research Building, named after Sidney and Caroline Kimmel in recognition of their $70 million donation.
The structure will take the place of a five-story parking garage at the corner of Locust Street and 9th Street. The design consists of a series of interlocking rectangular shapes, with the primary massing of the building sheathed in thin vertical mullions. The building is set back from the street, while a brick-clad podium projects to the corner and meets the street with oversized windows. The Jefferson logo graces the crown.
Jefferson Hospital continues to expand its Center City campus with new additions. The organization recently finished renovations at 1101 Market Street, formerly known as the Aramark Tower. Excavation has also started at East Market Phase 3, which consists of the a 400-foot-tall Speciality Care Pavilion and a shorter residential building. these projects, along with other unrelated developments such as the Arthaus across from the Kimmel Center (which also bears the same donors’ name due to their donation in 1995), are rapidly transforming the section of Center City east of Market Street.
No completion date has yet been announced.
