A second tower crane has been erected at East Market Phase 3, the two-tower project under construction at 1101 Chestnut Street and 1153 Chestnut Street in Market East, Center City, two blocks to the south of Reading Terminal Market. The 372-foot Thomas Jefferson Specialty Care Pavilion was designed by Ennead Architects and Stantec, and the 329-foot residential tower to the east is designed by Morris Adjmi Architects. The Jefferson building will have a wavy glass exterior, while the other tower will be clad with glass and orange terracotta with rounded edges. National Real Estate Group is the developer for the project.

In the last update, the excavation for the large site had finished and the foundation work was underway. No site of dirt was seen and the layout for the cores and beams were laid out to soon start vertical progress. The foundation walls were complete and rear was being installed to the bottom of the site. Concrete forms has scattered the site as most were ready to be set up, while some structures had already started to take shape.

Last month, one crane was erected in the middle of the site closer to Chestnut Street. The crane was hardly in operation at the time, but just a few weeks ago another tower crane was erected on the east side of the site. Though the cranes are at a usual height where they are set up in foundations, the shorter buildings in the area allow for the cranes to poke out in the Philadelphia skyline. Several concrete columns have been erected on the west side of the site and the first floor above the mat is being set up for a future concrete pour. The concrete work could be at ground level by summer or fall.

Both towers are scheduled for completion in June 2023.

  1. While I am ok with this project, I despise the piece of Philadelphia history that was leveled to make way for this. WAKE ? UP ? HISTORIC ? COMMISSION?

  2. It’s better than nothing. 🙂

  3. It’s great that Jefferson has chosen to build both buildings at the same time
