YIMBY recently published the long-awaited reveal of the plans for Two Cathedral Square at 227 North 18th Street in Logan Square, Center City. The new building that will join the north side of the Philadelphia skyline as part of the Cathedral Square development. Developed by EQT Exeter and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, the tower will soon rise to a height of 470 feet and will feature a curvy, angled parapet, standing 34 stories above ground. The building was designed by Solomon Cordwell Buenz, which has also designed Philadelphia buildings such as The Murano, The Laurel Rittenhouse, and 33 North 22nd Street. Updated plans have recently been released for Two Cathedral Square, a 470-foot-tall, 34-story mixed-use commercial and residential tower planned at 227 North 18th Street in Logan Square. Designed by Solomon Cordwell Buenz and developed by EQT Exeter, with Studio Bryan Hanes handling landscape design, the 700,000-square-foot-plus building is the largest component of Cathedral Square, a redevelopment master plan for the block-sized archdiocesan campus centered on the iconic Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. Cladding Installation Begins at Cathedral Square Phase One in Logan Square, Center City

Cladding installation has begun on the first high-rise of the two-tower Cathedral Square development in Logan Square, Center City. Cathedral Square Phase One is located at 222 North 17th Street, just to the east of Cathedral Basilica of Saint Peter and Paul. Designed by Solomon Cornwell Buenz and developed by the Exeter Development Group, the residential tower will rise to a height of 245 feet and 23 stories.

Architecture Firm Solomon Cordwell Buenz Comes In at Number 23 on Philly YIMBY’s First Anniversary Countdown

Philadelphia YIMBY’s First Anniversary Countdown, which looks at the most frequently mentioned article categories over the course of the past year, finds architecture firm Solomon Cordwell Buenz at number 23 out of the more than 1,800 analyzed categories, with a total of 34 tags amassed during the period. The company, which is (spoiler alert) the only architecture firm to feature in the entire Countdown, owes its high ranking to both a large number of significant ongoing developments and our prolific coverage of such.

We apologize for the somewhat confusing headline. Philadelphia YIMBY’s First Anniversary Countdown tracks the most frequently mentioned article categories over the course of the past year. Last year’s December Development Countdown, which looked at the 31 tallest buildings under construction or proposed in the city, racked up 31 category listings during its month-long run, earning it the 24th place on the ongoing countdown. Today we look at the top three entries from the December Countdown, all located in Center City, and check in on the progress they have made so far in 2021.

Permits Issued for 139 North 23rd Street in Logan Square, Center City

Permits have been issued for the construction of a 115-unit multi-family building at 139 North 23rd Street in Logan Square, Center City. Designed by Solomon Cordwell Buenz and developed by the PMC Property Group, the building will rise four stories tall and will feature a roof deck with a green roof. In total, the building will hold 122,576 square feet of space. The developer was permitted to include the higher-than-standard unit count through the utilization of green roof and mixed-income density bonuses. A below-grade garage will hold 42 parking spaces. Construction costs are estimated at $35 million.

Cathedral Square Phase One Takes Shape at 222 North 17th Street in Logan Square, Center City

The first phase of the Cathedral Square development is underway and rising at 222 North 17th Street in Logan Square, Center City. The building, at this time known as Cathedral Square Phase 1, will rise 245 feet and 23 stories tall. The tower is designed by Solomon Cornwell Buenz, which had also designed the Murano condominium and The Laurel Rittenhouse, which is currently under construction. The two-tower complex is being developed by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and Exeter Property Group, which will span much of the city block that is situated three blocks to the north of the Comcast Center.

Cathedral Square Phase One Rises Above Ground At 222 North 17th Street In Logan Square, Center City

A portion of the ground floor has been constructed at Cathedral Square Phase 1 at 222 North 17th Street in Logan Square, Center City. Designed by Solomon Cordwell Buenz and developed by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and Exeter Property Group, the reinforced concrete building will stand 245 feet and 23 stories tall and will be visible from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, with an all-glass skin that angles in and out. The tower will be a part of the Cathedral Square development (formerly known as Cathedral Place), which also includes Cathedral Square Phase 2, a massive tower proposed to the north. The building’s crane is one of over a dozen tower cranes currently stand in multiple locations in Philadelphia, with most located in Center City.

A Look At Past Designs for the Bell Atlantic Tower in Logan Square, Center City

In the 1980s, new skyscraper proposals surged after the proposed Liberty Place project was poised to break the 548-foot height limit established by the tower of City Hall. Five of the proposals now stand in the skyline, which include the 739-foot-tall Bell Atlantic Tower at 1717 Arch Street in Logan Square, Center City. Designed by Kling Lindquist, the setbacks of the 55-story skyscraper were partially inspired by structures such as the Empire State Building and One Liberty Place, which itself is similar to the Chrysler Building. Brandywine Realty Trust has owned the skyscraper since 2010, and is now officially known as Three Logan Square. Today Philly YIMBY looks at the alternate designs that were once considered for the structure.

Conversion Work Underway at The Terrace On 18th Street in Logan Square, Center City

Renovation work continues at the the 27-story hotel-to-residential conversion at Terrace on 18th Street at 1776 Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Logan Square, Center City. Designed by Oskar Stonorov of Korman Co., the tower was completed in 1963 as an apartment building. In the mid=1980s it was converted into the Embassy Suites by Hilton Philadelphia Center City, around the same time as the Embassy Suites at Philadelphia International Airport also opened with a similar design. The tower is now owned by Pearl Properties, which is also responsible for The Harper and 113-121 South 19th Street. The conversion was designed by DAS Architecture, and exterior renderings are provided by Gabe Lui Architectural Renderings.
