The growth of the Philadelphia skyline has significantly accelerated in the past five years, with projects like the Comcast Technology Center, FMC Tower, W/Element Hotel having been recently finished and more new towers currently under construction. Of course, tower cranes have a prominent presence at each high-rise construction site, whether freestanding or attached to the skeleton of the building. This collection of photos observes the tower cranes that are currently rising in the Philadelphia skyline in areas ranging from Center City to West Philadelphia and even North Philadelphia.

Permits Issued for Parking Garage at East Market Phase 3 in Market East, Center City

Permits have been issued for the parking garage at 1101-53 Chestnut Street, part of the East Market Phase 3 development in Market East, Center City. The garage will be situated underground beneath the two future towers with three levels of underground parking and 300 parking spaces, which will be shared between the two superstructures. t will include 37 compact parking spots with 15 spaces for preferential parking, as well as 15 electric vehicle spaces with chargers and eight ADA spaces, where two will be van-accessible. The garage will total 156,456 square feet and cost an estimated $42,357,933 to construct.

Wilmington, DE Reveals 4,291-unit Mixed-Use Riverfront East Master Plan

A master plan has been revealed in Wilmington, the most populous city in the the state of Delaware, located at the southwest periphery of the Philadelphia metro area, for an all-new neighborhood that will transform the Christina River waterfront. Designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, LLC, the plan, dubbed Riverfront East, will bring 4.7 million square feet of space, which includes 4,291 new residential units as well as 1.9 million square feet of commercial office space. Retail will occupy an additional 357,000 square feet. The development will also include four major green spaces as well as 650 on-street parking spaces and 8,900 spaces in parking garages.

As the World Remembers Helmut Jahn, One Liberty Place Lights Up the Skyline

Philadelphia YIMBY often shares exciting and uplifting news regarding the city and its development. However, on May 8th, in Chicago, world-renowned architect Helmut Jahn was tragically killed in a road incident not far from his eponymous firm. According to the press, Jahn was biking near his home, 40 miles away from Chicago, when he was struck by two vehicles and was pronounced dead the next day at 81 years old. The architect was born on January 4, 1940 in Zindorf, Germany, and has designed an incredible amount of buildings between 1974 and 2017. In his lifetime, Jahn has produced unique and awe-inspiring designs throughout the world, which stood out as ahead of their time, and has left a dramatic imprint on the Philadelphia skyline.
