Renderings Revealed for Amy Gutmann Hall at 3317-33 Chestnut Street in University City, West Philadelphia

A new data science building at 3317-33 Chestnut Street in University City, West Philadelphia, is going before the Civic Design Review. Designed by Lake | Flato, with KSS Architects as the architect of record, the building, called Amy Gutmann Hall, will stand six stories tall upon completion and will span a large footprint. The development will yield 115,954 square feet of space and feature academic space, with the four uppermost floors set to be occupied by research centers. A total of 29 parking spaces will also be included within the project, situated underground.

While the Philadelphia skyline is growing upward, it is also extending further outward with new proposals. Cathedral Square, a development consisting of two skyscrapers, is on its way up in the Logan Square neighborhood in Center City, with the first tower already under construction at 1701 Race Street. Just to the north, Two Cathedral Square will soon stand 470 feet and 34 stories tall at 227 North 18th Street. The tower was designed by Solomon Cordwell Buenz and developed by Exter Property Group and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Looking Back At One Liberty Place Shortly After Completion

Between 1984 and 1987, a new monolith was constructed in the city of Philadelphia. For a long time the skyline was dominated by beige and brown buildings along with City Hall, but the blue-glass One Liberty Place at 1650 Market Street in Center City has broken out of the blocky and old styles and also broke the unofficial 548-foot height limit. Designed by Helmut Jahn of Murphy/Jahn and developed by Willard Rouse of Rouse and Associates, the tower rises 945 feet and stands 61 stories tall. In this feature, Philadelphia YIMBY looks back at One Liberty Place shortly after its completion.

Looking at the Philadelphia Skyline from the Observatory Atop One Liberty Place

Philadelphia is home to several tall skyscrapers in Center City, with One Liberty Place among the most iconic in the group. The steel-framed tower rises at 1650 Market Street to a height of 945 feet and 61 stories above the ground. The skyscraper was designed by Helmut Jahn, who has unfortunately passed in May of last year, as part of the Liberty Place project developed by Rouse and Associates. At the moment, only two observatories operate in the city, as one has closed last year. Today we look at views from theh currently closed One Liberty Observation Deck, located on the 57th floor in the skyscraper’s gabled crown.

Permits Issued for 128-Unit Building at 4240 Chestnut Street in Spruce Hill, West Philadelphia

Permits have been issued for the construction of a seven-story, 128-unit mixed-use building at 4240 Chestnut Street in Spruce Hill, West Philadelphia. Designed by DAS Architects, the building will rise on the south side of the block between South 42nd and South 43rd streets. The structure will rise from a 27,829-square-foot footprint and contain 141,928 square feet of interior space, of which nearly 40,000 square feet will feature office use. Unit sizes will average at just below 800 square feet each. Permits list Intercultural Family Services as the owner, Morris Clarke as the design professional, and HC Pody Company as the contractor. Construction costs are specified at $15.3 million.

The 6th Place on Philly YIMBY’s December Countdown Goes to Two Cathedral Square, 227 North 18th Street in Logan Square, Center City

The 6th place on Philadelphia YIMBY’s December 2021 Development Countdown goes to Two Cathedral Square, a 470-foot-tall, 34-story mixed-use commercial and residential tower proposed at 227 North 18th Street in Logan Square, Center City. Designed by Solomon Cordwell Buenz and developed by EQT Exeter, with Studio Bryan Hanes behind the landscape design, the 700,000-square-foot-plus building is part of Cathedral Square, a redevelopment master plan for the block-sized archdiocesan campus around the iconic Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. The building will offer 450,000 square feet of office space on floors two through 14. Luxury residential space will span 250,000 square feet on floors 15 through 34. The ground level will feature 4,500 square feet of retail. The development will also include parking for 200 cars as well as a bicycle storage room. The building will be serviced by eight office elevators, two residential elevators, a freight elevator, and a swing passenger-freight elevator within the residential component.

A Look at the Lobby of the Comcast Technology Center, Philadelphia’s Tallest Building

The Comcast Technology Center at 1800 Arch Street in Center City is both the tallest building and one of the largest structures in Philadelphia, standing 1,121 feet tall and spanning over 1.5 million square feet of interior space. Completed in 2017, the supertall stands 60 stories high and features office space on its lower floors and a hotel on its upper levels, with an observation deck at the top. The project was developed by Liberty Property Trust and designed by Foster and Partners, with Thornton Tomasetti behind the structural design and LF Driscoll as the contractor. Gensler crafted the exquisite and sometimes bizarre interior of the main lobby, with an architectural style well-suited for the modern workforce and the general public alike. In this feature, Philadelphia YIMBY observes the east lobby of the Comcast Technology Center which is open to the employees and the public at limited times.

The 25th place on Philly YIMBY’s December 2021 Development Countdown goes to the 295-foot-tall, 19-story office building under construction at 2222 Market Street in Center City West. Designed by Gensler and developed by the Parkway Corporation (alternately Parkway Commercial Properties), with IMC Construction as the contractor, the development will feature 329,100 square feet of tenant floor area, with 324,826 square feet of Class A office space and 4,274 square feet of retail, as well as a 47-car underground garage. The structure is being built as the new headquarters for Morgan Lewis, a major law firm. Features will include ten-foot-high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, several landscaped outdoor decks, flexible workspace plans, a conference center, a fitness center, Zoom conference rooms, expanded areas for servicing out-of-office visitors, and rooms with advanced audio technology to facilitate virtual court hearings.

A set of new remote work-friendly features has recently been revealed at 2222 Market Street, a 295-foot-tall, 19-story office building under construction in Center City West. Designed by Gensler and developed by the Parkway Corporation (alternately Parkway Commercial Properties), with IMC Construction as the contractor, the building will offer 329,100 square feet of tenant floor area, with 324,826 square feet of Class A office space and 4,274 square feet of retail. Construction Progresses at One uCity Square, Bringing 389,000 Square Feet of Office, Lab, and Retail to University City in West Philadelphia

The 29th Place on Philly YIMBY’s December 2021 Development Countdown goes to One uCity Square, a mixed-use building currently under construction in University City, West Philadelphia. Designed by ZGF Architects and developed by Wexford Science & Technology, the University City Science Center, and Ventas Inc., with Turner Construction as the contractor, the $280-million 13-story building will hold 389,000 square feet of office, laboratory, and retail space. The 250-foot-tall building, also known as Wexford One uCity Square, is part of the greater mixed-use uCity Square development, which will feature 10.5 million square feet within 15 existing and 10 newly-constructed buildings. New construction will account for three-quarters of the total square footage.
