Grandeur and Desolation: Four Minor Buildings in North Philadelphia East are Gradually Turning the Tide in a Long-Neglected Neighborhood

During the postwar period, Philadelphia has undergone a period of depopulation and saw numerous demolitions. Neighborhoods were affected to widely varying degrees, with some remaining largely intact and others losing blocks upon blocks of their housing stock. Thankfully, the trend has reversed back to growth during the past couple of decades. Today we look at how four relatively minor buildings approved at North 7th Street in North Philadelphia East will help turn the tide in a long-neglected neighborhood.

Permits Issued for Six-Unit Building at 1929 North 7th Street in North Philadelphia East

Permits have been issued for the construction of a six-unit multi-family building at 1929 North 7th Street in North Philadelphia East near Temple University. Upon completion, the building will rise five stories tall. A roof deck will be located at the top of the structure. The building will hold 9,156 square feet of space and cost an estimated $900,000 to build.

Permits have been issued for the construction of a mixed-use development at 2234-38 North Broad Street in the Temple University area in North Philadelphia. Upon completion, the building will rise five stories tall and will include a commercial space on the ground floor and 29 residential units above. In total, the building will hold 35,042 square feet of space and cost an estimated $3,636,000 to build.

Permits Issued for 15 Workforce Townhouses at 1100 Diamond Street in the Temple University Area in North Philadelphia

Permits have been issued for the construction of 15 townhouses at 1100 Diamond Street in the Temple University area of North Philadelphia. The permits issued were for half of the homes as there are 30 residences planned in the full development. Eight units are already under construction. Each home will have three bedrooms and two bathrooms in the project and each is expected to sell for around $250,000 as workforce housing.
