A Look at the Sparks Shot Tower, Built in 1808 in Queen Village, South Philadelphia

Philadelphia features numerous old structures with interesting styles of architecture. One of the city’s oldest tall structures is the Sparks Shot Tower, which started construction in 1807 and was completed on July 4, 1808 at 129-131 Carpenter Street in the neighborhood now known as Queen Village in South Philadelphia. The facility, which predates the Civil War by almost 60 years, was designed by Thomas Sparks and John Bishop, who originated the idea for shot towers. The 143-foot-tall structure, which forms a brick-clad cylinder that tapers to the top, still stands to this day.

Permits Issued for Five Rowhouses at 2231-52 Cross Street in Point Breeze, South Philadelphia

Permits have been issued for the construction of multiple rowhouses in Point BreezeSouth Philadelphia. The project will total five homes at 2231 Cross Street, 2232 Cross Street, 2235 Cross Street, 2249 Cross Street, and 2252 Cross Street. Each structure will rise two stories tall so as to fit in with the rest of the block, and each will cost an estimated $102,500 to build.

Philly YIMBY Visits the Recently Completed Live! Casino and Hotel in The Sports Complex District, South Philadelphia

Philadelphia YIMBY has recently made a site visit to the Live! Casino and Hotel at 900 Packer Avenue, where it has recently finished construction in the Sports Complex District in South Philadelphia. The 1.5 million-square-foot development opened on February 11th, with both the casino and hotel opening to the public. The hotel stands 14 stories tall and features 215 units. The complex was designed by Bower Lewis Thrower Architects, which has also designed Symphony House and was on the design team for the FMC Tower. The developers, the Cordish Company and Greenwood Racing and Entertainment, has also erected two other Live! Casino and Hotel’s in Pittsburgh and Maryland.
