Updated Height, Plans, and Renderings Surface for CHOP’s Inpatient Tower in University City, West Philadelphia

In recent years, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has been in the process of expanding its University City campus via a $3.4 billion development plan, a major part of which is the $1.9 billion Inpatient Tower (aka New Patient Tower) proposed at 515 Osler Circle. Recently, a Philly YIMBY contributor has shared a pair of new renderings for the project. The Inpatient Tower was designed by Ballinger, with ZGF Architects (which has previously teamed up with CHOP to design its Medical Behavioral Unit) as the consultant and interiors/clinical architects. In addition, we present a separate drawing set consisting of a floor plan and building section, which reveal an updated structural height and a detailed building program. The schematics show that the tower will rise 434 feet and 23 stories tall and will span a total of 1.318 square feet, making for a significant addition to West Philadelphia’s already impressive medical sector.

Permits Issued for Amy Gutmann Hall at 3317-33 Chestnut Street in University City, West Philadelphia

A zoning permit has been issued for the construction of Amy Gutmann Hall at 3317-23 Chestnut Street in University City, West Philadelphia. The stricture will house a research facility for Penn and will rise six stories tall, with academic space on the lower floors and a research center on the upper floors. The development will also include 29 parking spaces.

Permits Issued for Nine-Story Penn Presbyterian Medical Center Parking Garage in University City, West Philadelphia

Permits have been issued for the construction of a nine-story parking garage for the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center at 3800 Powelton Avenue in University City, West Philadelphia. Designed and engineered by Pennoni and THA Consulting, the massive structure will span 481,702 square feet and offer parking for 1,483 cars and 129 bicycles, as well as ground-level commercial space. Permits list HSC Builders & Construction as the contractor and a construction cost of $46.4 million.

Exterior Nearly Complete at Drexel University Health Sciences Building at 3601 Filbert Street, University City, West Philadelphia

A recent site visit by Philly YIMBY revealed that exterior work is nearly complete at the Drexel University Health Sciences Building, which is under construction at 3601 Filbert Street in University City, West Philadelphia. Also known as the Drexel College of Nursing and Health Professions or the Wexford Drexel Academic Tower, the building rises 14 stories, with 12 primary plus two mechanical floors, and is designed by Ballinger and developed by Wexford Science & Technology, with Turner Construction as the contractor. Upon its anticipated completion later this year, the structure will span over 450,000 square feet and will house Drexel University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions as well as a significant portion of the functions of the College of Medicine. The building is a part of Wexford’s and Drexel’s 14-acre, jointly-developed uCity Square complex, which is rapidly transforming the northern section of University City.

YIMBY Shares an Encore of Construction Photos for The Standard at Philadelphia in University City, West Philadelphia

A few days ago, Philly YIMBY shared a construction update for The Standard At Philadelphia, a 209-foot-tall, 19-story residential tower under construction at 119 South 31st Street in University City, West Philadelphia. Designed by CUBE 3 and developed by Landmark Properties, the 362,117-square-foot structure will rise from a narrow, through-block lot stretching between South 30th and South 31st streets, and will house 280 residential units geared toward university students. Our recent visit has revealed that on-site demolition has been completed and foundation work is currently in progress. Today we share another look at the construction progress and how it affects the unusual and varied conditions that flank the site on three sides.

YIMBY Looks at UPenn’s Recently Completed New College House West in University City, West Philadelphia

As universities across Philadelphia and the country as a whole return to in-person learning, the University of Pennsylvania marked the occasion with the opening of one of the largest new dormitory buildings to be built in the city in years. As its name alludes, New College House West (also known simply as the New College House) is situated on the western fringe of the campus at 201 South 40th Street (alternately 211 South 40th Street or 4000 Locust Street) in University City, West Philadelphia. Designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, the structure rises 165 feet and 13 stories at its highest point. The 250,000-square-foot, $169.5-million structure is built to accommodate around 430 sophomore, junior, and senior students (exact student count varies depending on source, with some citing around 450 beds) while offering ample indoor sunlight, student and public amenities, and outdoor space. Construction Underway at Vagelos Laboratory For Energy Science And Technology in University City, West Philadelphia

Construction work is underway at the University of Pennsylvania‘s Vagelos Laboratory For Energy Science and Technology at 3200 Walnut Street in University City, West Philadelphia. Designed by Behnisch Architekten, the extravagantly-styled building will stand seven stories tall and will offer space for energy research. The structure will combine office space, optics research laboratories, and wet chemistry research labs. The building is expected to come at a price tag of $173 million.

Pedestrian Bridge Opens to Public at Penn Medicine Pavilion in University City, West Philadelphia

A new pedestrian bridge across Convention Avenue has opened to the public in University City, West Philadelphia, connecting Penn Medicine’s recently completed Pavilion building at 300 South 33rd Street to SEPTA’s Penn Medicine Station (formerly known as the University City Station), one of the system’s busiest. The opening has been confirmed by Philly YIMBY’s recent site visit, which revealed that the crossing is fully operational aside from the elevator, which, according to on-site signage, will be completed in spring.

Construction Progresses at The Standard at Philadelphia in University City, West Philadelphia

Construction work is beginning to make headway at The Standard At Philadelphia, a high-rise development underway at 119 South 31st Street in University City, West Philadelphia. Designed by Cube3, the new tower will stand 19 stories and approximately 210 feet all. The structure will hold 280 residential units, targeted towards student housing, as well as 37 parking spaces to serve these residential units. Permits list the cost of construction at $50 million.

Topping-Out Imminent at 3.0 University Place in University City, West Philadelphia

Construction is making steady progress at 3.0 University Place, a major commercial develop situated at 4101-23 Market Street, on the fringe of University City, West Philadelphia. The building rise eight stories tall and yield 272,294 square feet of space, with the ground floor housing retail space. The upper floors will hold office and laboratory space. A green roof will be situated atop the building.
