Looking Back at the Unbuilt Red Bank Bridge Proposal in South Philadelphia

In the 1920s, Philadelphia was on the rise, with industry and was with business activity bustling across the city. The port was generally busy, the skyline was growing, and as automobiles surged in numbers, the city was in need of bridges spanning the Delaware River and connecting to New Jersey on the other side. The proposed Philadelphia-Red Bank Bridge was brought to public attention by Mayor J. Hampton Moore, who suggested that the city is in dire need of a new bridge at its south end. The bridge would have been situated very close to the present location of the Walt Whitman Bridge, though slightly further west and running from the north to the south rather than from the west to the east.

Ornate Prewar Townhouse Makes Way for Similarly-Sized Building at 2043 Fitzwater Street in Graduate Hospital, South Philadelphia

Philadelphia’s ongoing construction surge is a major boon for the city, and occasional demolitions are needed for the city’s continued growth. However, some teardowns are rather unfortunate and unnecessary, to put it mildly, particularly when they take down a preservation-worthy edifice in apparently sound structural condition, or when the replacement offers no notable increase in scale, density, or functional use. The proposal at 2043 Fitzwater Street in Graduate Hospital, South Philadelphia, checks off on both of these concerns, where a finely ornamented, contextually appropriate, apparently well-maintained prewar townhouse is being demolished to make way for a four-story, three-unit building that will offer only a marginal boost both in scale and density.

Construction in Progress at 1507 Christian Street in Graduate Hospital, South Philadelphia

Framing work is making rapid progress on 1507 Christian Street, a multi-family development rising in Graduate Hospital, South Philadelphia. Designed by Gnome Architects and developed by Zatos Investments, the new building will rise four stories tall with a roof deck situated at the pinnacle. Five luxury condo units will be located within the structure, which will hold 6,168 square feet of space in total.

A Look Back at the Walt Whitman Bridge Repainting in 2017

Over five years ago, the Walt Whitman Bridge in Walt Whitman Bridge in South Philadelphia was preparing for a renovation that would span several years. The 11,981-foot-long suspension bridge (2,000 feet long at the main span) opened on May 16, 1957 and was in need of a repaint after the last paint job in the late 1990s. The bridge was developed by Delaware River Port Authority and designed by Othmar Ammann, who had designed notable bridges such as New York City‘s Verrazzano-Narrows-Bridge, George Washington Bridge, Bayonne Bridge, and the Bronx-Whilestine Bridge. The bridges towers stand 378 feet tall and has a clearance of 153 feet above the river.

Permits have been issued for the construction of three multi-family buildings at 1703-07 Point Breeze Avenue in Point Breeze, South Philadelphia. Upon completion, each will rise four stories tall, with two residential units each and a grand total of six. Each building will each hold around 1,400 square feet of space, with listed construction costs of $220,000 per structure.
