Exterior Nearly Complete at Drexel University Health Sciences Building at 3601 Filbert Street, University City, West Philadelphia

A recent site visit by Philly YIMBY revealed that exterior work is nearly complete at the Drexel University Health Sciences Building, which is under construction at 3601 Filbert Street in University City, West Philadelphia. Also known as the Drexel College of Nursing and Health Professions or the Wexford Drexel Academic Tower, the building rises 14 stories, with 12 primary plus two mechanical floors, and is designed by Ballinger and developed by Wexford Science & Technology, with Turner Construction as the contractor. Upon its anticipated completion later this year, the structure will span over 450,000 square feet and will house Drexel University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions as well as a significant portion of the functions of the College of Medicine. The building is a part of Wexford’s and Drexel’s 14-acre, jointly-developed uCity Square complex, which is rapidly transforming the northern section of University City.

YIMBY Shares an Encore of Construction Photos for The Standard at Philadelphia in University City, West Philadelphia

A few days ago, Philly YIMBY shared a construction update for The Standard At Philadelphia, a 209-foot-tall, 19-story residential tower under construction at 119 South 31st Street in University City, West Philadelphia. Designed by CUBE 3 and developed by Landmark Properties, the 362,117-square-foot structure will rise from a narrow, through-block lot stretching between South 30th and South 31st streets, and will house 280 residential units geared toward university students. Our recent visit has revealed that on-site demolition has been completed and foundation work is currently in progress. Today we share another look at the construction progress and how it affects the unusual and varied conditions that flank the site on three sides.

YIMBY Looks at UPenn’s Recently Completed New College House West in University City, West Philadelphia

As universities across Philadelphia and the country as a whole return to in-person learning, the University of Pennsylvania marked the occasion with the opening of one of the largest new dormitory buildings to be built in the city in years. As its name alludes, New College House West (also known simply as the New College House) is situated on the western fringe of the campus at 201 South 40th Street (alternately 211 South 40th Street or 4000 Locust Street) in University City, West Philadelphia. Designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, the structure rises 165 feet and 13 stories at its highest point. The 250,000-square-foot, $169.5-million structure is built to accommodate around 430 sophomore, junior, and senior students (exact student count varies depending on source, with some citing around 450 beds) while offering ample indoor sunlight, student and public amenities, and outdoor space. Pedestrian Bridge Opens to Public at Penn Medicine Pavilion in University City, West Philadelphia

A new pedestrian bridge across Convention Avenue has opened to the public in University City, West Philadelphia, connecting Penn Medicine’s recently completed Pavilion building at 300 South 33rd Street to SEPTA’s Penn Medicine Station (formerly known as the University City Station), one of the system’s busiest. The opening has been confirmed by Philly YIMBY’s recent site visit, which revealed that the crossing is fully operational aside from the elevator, which, according to on-site signage, will be completed in spring.

Topping-Out Imminent at 3.0 University Place in University City, West Philadelphia

Construction is making steady progress at 3.0 University Place, a major commercial develop situated at 4101-23 Market Street, on the fringe of University City, West Philadelphia. The building rise eight stories tall and yield 272,294 square feet of space, with the ground floor housing retail space. The upper floors will hold office and laboratory space. A green roof will be situated atop the building.

Work Wraps Up On ANOVA UCity Square At 3700 Lancaster Avenue In University City, West Philadelphia

Construction work is essentially complete at ANOVA UCity Square, a 463-unit mixed-use development located at 3700 Lancaster Avenue in University City, West Philadelphia. Designed by Lessard Design and developed by GMH Capital Partners and Wexford Science and Technology, the building stands six stories tall, with retail space along Lancaster Avenue and apartments above. The building is a part of the greater uCity Square megadevelopment, which is set to become one of the most major office and laboratory hubs in the city. A total of 157 parking spaces are also included within the project.

Permits Issued for 3151 Market Street in University City, West Philadelphia

Permits have been issued for the construction of a 14-story mixed-use commercial tower at 3151 Market Street in University City, West Philadelphia. Designed by Gensler and developed by Brandywine Realty Trust, the building will yield 495,000 square feet, rising as part of the massive Schuylkill Yards development. A lobby and retail space will occupy the majority of the ground floor. Office and laboratory space will be situated on the floors above, adding much-needed lab space to the University City market. The tower also feature a green roof. Permits list construction costs at just over $41 million.

University City, the central hub of West Philadelphia, is teeming with new under-construction developments. Of these, one of the most significant is the 361-foot-tall, 28-story mixed-use tower currently rising at 3025 John F. Kennedy Boulevard. Designed by the Practice for Architecture and Urbanism and developed by Brandywine Realty Trust, the building will span a total of 559,583 square feet of interior space, combining commercial space on the lower floors with 326 residential floors situated above. A new data science building at 3317-33 Chestnut Street in University City, West Philadelphia, is going before the Civic Design Review. Designed by Lake | Flato, with KSS Architects as the architect of record, the building, called Amy Gutmann Hall, will stand six stories tall upon completion and will span a large footprint. The development will yield 115,954 square feet of space and feature academic space, with the four uppermost floors set to be occupied by research centers. A total of 29 parking spaces will also be included within the project, situated underground.

The first Schuylkill Yards skyscraper now officially rises above ground at 3025 John F. Kennedy Boulevard in University City. The tower, also known as Schuylkill Yards West, is sited just to the northwest of Drexel Square. Designed by the Practice for Architecture and Urbanism and developed by Brandywine Realty Trust, the high-rise will eventually reach 361 feet and 28 stories in height, and will consist of 326 residential units and lab space. The structure is a part of the 14-acre mega-project that will change the West Philadelphia skyline, and is the latest phase in the project’s construction since the renovation of the Bulletin Building.
