Permits have been issued for the construction of a ten-unit multi-family structure at 701 North 40th Street in Mantua, West Philadelphia. The building will rise three stories tall upon completion. The structure will hold 3,158 square feet of space, include a roof deck, and cost $550,000 to build, although both of these numbers seem low for ten units.
With the growth of rail transit in the early 1900s across the country, Philadelphia’s train network was also expanding. After the construction of the Broad Street Station, the larger 30th Street Station was built in University City, West Philadelphia, in order to increase the capacity of local transit. Built by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the station sits on the west side of the Schuylkill River, right in the middle of where John F. Kennedy Boulevard would run, with rail lines running and under the station and across the river. The Classic Revival structure was designed by Graham, Anderson, Probst & White, which also designed the Suburban Station in Center City and The Wrigley Building in Chicago.
Permits have been issued for the construction of a multi-family building at 4146 Parkside Avenue in the neighborhood of Parkside, West Philadelphia. The building will rise five stories tall with 28 residential units. In total, the new structure will hold 26,960 square feet of space and cost an estimated $4 million to build.
Construction is progressing at Ludlow 43 at 12-14 South 43rd Street in Spruce Hill, West Philadelphia. The building will rise six stories and 76 feet tall, making it one of the larger buildings in the area. In total, 18 residential units will be included within the building, with eight one-bedrooms, five two-bedroom, three three-bedroom, and two four-bedroom apartments. Also included in the development will be five parking spaces, a fitness center, and a roof deck.
Structural framing continues to progress at the Drexel College of Nursing and Health Professions, a high-rise building that is a part of the 14-acre uCity Square development in University City, West Philadelphia. Designed by Ballinger and developed by Wexford Science and Technology LLC, the tower will rise 12 stories and 185 feet tall. The building will yield 174,000 square feet of space and will feature a combination of office and classroom space and will help extend Drexel University’s campus farther west.
