A Look at the Unbuilt City Tower by Louis Kahn in Center City

In the 1950s, Philadelphia was starting to see a rise in new development as developers focused on Center City, particularly after the demolition of the “Chinese Wall” opened up a large swath of space from City Hall to the Schuylkill River. A wild proposal called the City Tower was revealed in the late 1950s at 1400 Arch Street, where the Philadelphia Municipal Services Building currently stands. The 30-story tower would have stood just to the north of City Hall. The tower was designed by Louis I. Kahn in a dramatic Futurist style, as the building’s design and form were way ahead of its time.

Site preparation is now underway at 3.0 University Place, a mixed-use development 4101-23 Market Street in University City, West Philadelphia. Upon completion, the building will rise eight stories tall. Retail and commercial space will be situated on the ground floor, with office and lab space located on the upper floors. The building will also include a green roof. In total, 274,294 square feet of space will be located within the structure.

Permits Issued for Four-Unit Building at 2118-20 Fitzwater Street in Graduate Hospital, South Philadelphia

A permit has been issued for the construction of a three-story, four-unit residential building at 2118-20-Fitzwater-Street in Graduate Hospital, South Philadelphia. Located on the south side of the block between South 21st Street and South 22nd Street, the structure will rise from a 1,091-square-foot footprint and will contain 3,550 square feet of interior space, lending an average of 888 square feet per unit. Permits list Genece E. Brinkley as the owner, Scott Woodruff as the architect, and Chris Steinbiss as the contractor. Construction is expected to cost $400,000.

CHOP Hub For Clinical Collaboration Receives Cladding in University City, West Philadelphia

Glass and stone cladding is being installed at the CHOP Hub for Clinical Collaboration at 3501 Civic Center Boulevard in University City, West Philadelphia. The tower is about to reach its full height of 377 feet and 19 stories. Designed by Perkins+Will, the structure will feature over 550,000 square feet of floor space. The project is being developed by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which is developing a $4 billion master plan that the Hub for Clinical Collaboration is a part of.

Excavation Equipment On Site at 1823 Callowhill Street in Franklintown, Center City

Excavation is in progress at 1823 Callowhill Street in Franklintown, North Philadelphia. Designed by Wulff Architects, the building will rise six stories tall and will feature 57 residential units, according to a CDR filing from last April. A 5,000 square foot fresh food market will be located on the ground floor, as well as two commercial spaces, with one holding 1,500 square feet of space, and the other with 680 square feet of space. No parking space is planned for the property, which makes sense given its location that is within walking distance of many Center City destinations.

In the 1960s, Philadelphia observed a rise in development with ample space available for new buildings in Center City. The William Penn statue at the pinnacle of City Hall still topped the Philadelphia skyline with a height of 548 feet, though it was surrounded by high-rises that stood nearly as tall. Today YIMBY presents massing renderings of the skyline as it appeared in 1965, when a new batch of modern and blocky towers were rising, with still more proposed.

Foundation Work Nearly Complete at 2222 Market Street in Center City West

After a rapid excavation, the foundation for 2222 Market Street in Center City West is nearly complete. The building will rise to a total height of 318 feet and 20 stories above the ground. Designed by Gensler and developed by Parkway Commercial Properties, the tower will feature a glass façade with stone highlights and glass, along with public space and amenity space. The building will stand at the former site of a 21,000-square-foot parking lot, which was also owned by the developer.

19-Unit Building Approved at 257 East Main Street in Norristown, PA

The municipal council has approved plans for a mixed-use development at 257 East Main Street in Norristown, PA, a town located near Philadelphia. Upon completion, the building will rise five stories tall and will feature a commercial space on the ground floor with 19 residential units above.

New Lighting Schemes Decorate Philadelphia Skyline at Night

Since the late 1980s, Philadelphia’s Center City skyscrapers featured appealing decorative lighting schemes. The first tower to be lit up was One Liberty Place at 1650 Market Street, completed in 1987, with lights accentuating the angled crown and the sharp spire. Over the years more high-rises towers were constructed that also displayed standout nighttime lighting, with one of the biggest recent additions being the Comcast Technology Center with its massive lantern at the top. Even more recent was the W/Element Hotel at 1441 Chestnut Street, where intensive testing of its the decorative lighting started just a few months ago.

Completion Nears at The Poplar at 900 North 9th Street in Poplar, North Philadelphia

Construction work has nearly wrapped up at The Poplar at 900 North 9th Street in Poplar, North Philadelphia, converting the prewar structure into residential space. Formerly known as the Quaker Building, the structure stands 11 stories tall next to the elevated SEPTA regional rail rail line, and was completed in 1918 as a factory loft. The 285-unit conversion project has been designed by Cosica Moos Architecture and developed by the Post Brothers, which is also responsible for the massive Piazza Terminal project in Northern Liberties.
